Goodwill represents the excess of the cost of an acquisition over the fair value of the Group’s share of the net identifiable assets of the acquired subsidiary/associate at the date of the acquisition. Goodwill on acquisitions of associates is included in ‘investments in associates’ and is tested for impairment as part of the overall balance. Separately recognized goodwill is tested annually for impairment and carried at cost less accumulated impairment losses. Impairment losses on goodwill are not reversed. Gain or losses on the disposal of an entity includes the carrying amount of goodwill relating to the entity disposed of. For the purpose of impairment testing, goodwill is allocated to cash-generating units. The allocations made to those cash- generating units or groups of cash-generating units that are expected to benefit from the business combination in which the goodwill arises. The Group has acquired the health portfolio of Anadolu Hayat Emeklilik A.Ş. as of August 31, 2004 with all of its rights and liabilities. The value at acquisition of the portfolio amounting to TRY 16.250.000 is capitalized as goodwill by the Group. 2.8 Financial assets A financial asset is any asset that is cash, an equity instrument of another entity, a contractual right to receive cash or another financial asset from another entity; or to exchange financial assets or financial liabilities with another entity under conditions that are potentially favourable to the entity. Securities are recognized and derecognized at the date of settlement. Financial assets are classified in four categories; as financial assets held for trading, available-for-sale financial assets, held to maturity financial assets, and loans and receivables. Financial assets at fair value through profit or loss are presented as financial assets held for trading in the accompanying consolidated financial statements and trading securities and derivatives are included in this category. Financial assets at fair value through profit or loss measured at their fair values and gain/loss arising due to changes in the fair values of related financial assets are recorded in the statement of income. Interest income earned on trading purpose financial assets and the difference between their fair values and acquisition costs are recorded as interest income in the statement of income. In case of disposal of such financial assets before their maturities, the gains/losses on such disposal are recorded under trading income/losses. Accounting policies of derivatives are detailed in note 2.10 - Derivative financial instruments . Loans and receivables are non-derivative financial assets with fixed or determinable payments that are not quoted in an active market. They arise when the Company provides money, goods or services directly to a debtor with no intention of trading the receivable. Loans and receivables those are not interest earning are measured by discounting of future cash flows less impairment losses, and interest earning loans and receivables are measured at amortized cost less impairment losses. Held to maturity financial assets are the financial assets with fixed maturities and fixed or pre-determined payment schedules that the Company has the intent and ability to hold until maturity, excluding loans and receivables. Subsequent to initial recognition, held to maturity financial assets and loans and receivables are measured at amortized cost using effective interest rate method less impairment losses, if any.
